Mam Tor is a 517 m hill near Castleton in the High Peak of Derbyshire, England. Its name means “mother hill”, so called because frequent landslips on its eastern face have resulted in a multitude of “mini-hills” beneath it.

Mam Tor another spectacular hike that we did will on vacation to England.

We set off in the early hours of the morning and made another two-hour drive to the out skirts of Castleton. Where we parked and climb a short steep pathway to top of a mountain.

The idea here was to take in the sunrise, we started this hike in the dark and cold so I don’t have to explain to you how this Trini was covered up.

On reaching the top of Mam Tor (Broken Road) we meet a little crowd, seems a lot of other persons had the same idea. Everyone sitting waiting patiently on the sun to rise and as it did it was so beautiful.

Picture we are looking at a valley surrounded by mountains, and as the sun starts coming up you can only see a chimney protruding through the mist.

As the sun came up the sky changed from different colors of orange until the bright sun reached high in the sky.

With the sun coming up and the place getting brighter we took the path and walked alone the ridge line. While doing so the mist slowly disappeared to reveal the village of Castleton below.

Following the trail, we would stop at a point named Back Tor where we could see another valley, and the train passing through the mist. At this point we got some nice sunrise pictures with the valleys in the background.

Move on we would then reach Lose Hill (Wikepedia), where you would find the medieval map marking the highest point on the ridge and showing the location of other points.

For there we would make our way down through the gated areas, passing sheep and cows to finally end up in the village.

 

 

Walking through the village was and experience by itself, the designs of the building and layout of some of the houses, it was something straight out of a movie.

We even visited a Peak Cavern known as the The Devil’s Arse! Unfortunately, we were there to early so we didn’t get to go in the cave.

The journey through the village was a nice scenic walk, and from there we made our way back onto another trail over the mountain back to car.

This journey was seven to eight miles, but you had to take you time and stop to enjoy the beauty of it, and there was plenty to see.
