Los Iros – Mud Volcano

Yet another great location to visit is the Mud Volcano found in the village of Los Iros on the southern west peninsula of Trinidad.

Los Iros is a small fishing village found along the SS Erin Road, it is possibly a two hour drive from Port of Spain.

It is known for it beach and its fishing industry, Los Iros which translated to the “The Rock” is giving its name due to the rocky beach.

Just as you arrive at the Los Iros beach there is a road on the left that runs parallel to the beach.

This road takes you to the volcano, it may be about a fifteen minutes drive from the junction, because the road is rough, and narrow.

This road however takes you up a hill, where at the top you have a brilliant view of the coast and Venezuela as you drive along it.

The area seems to be a farming area, as you will pass along numerous gardens.

When you reach the pimento fields on the left and the big hog plum trees find a park on the side of the narrow road.

The trail is on the next corner to the right, it is pretty short and straight forward.

It will take you maybe five minutes, but if rain falls it will be muddy so be prepared to take a lil slide down one of the slopes.

I recommend using one of those tall rubber boots, as the mud sticks to you shoes and will make it heavy.

The Mud Volcano

The volcano is on a hill with wide open area, the mouth is at the top and large enough to jump in.

The natives in the area also created some slide down the hill, which we were lucky to see them demonstrate to us.

You can also walk down the hill and you will see some other small craters, bubbling with mud and water.

The one downside is that there is no place to wash off after, the beach might be more than thirty minutes walking with no shade.

The natives seem to frequent the volcanos, as we saw numerous groups heading in while we were there.

A nice destination for a road trip, and soak in the mud which people say is good for the skin.
